The Story of Sea Oats Soap:

​Giving Back to the Beaches

Founders Erik and Barb started Sea Oats Soap with the intention to give back to their treasured beaches.
Longtime beach lovers Erik and Barb started Sea Oats Soap with a simple mission in mind: to have fun together while giving back to the beaches which have provided them so much joy over the years.

Making beautiful handmade soaps began as a hobby for Barb to relax after long days of work. When Erik, a former publishing manager retired, they began thinking about how to bring more awareness to preserving beaches and marine life for coming generations, including their 10 grandchildren.

After observing and discovering the significance of the Sea Oats plant on their many walks along the beach, they named their venture: Sea Oats Soap. They learned that Sea Oats have become one of the “anchor” plants for the sand dunes, which act as a buffer zone to protect beaches against storms. As Barb participated in local “turtle walks” with sea turtle conservation groups, she soon discovered there was a connection with the preservation of the dunes to the entire shoreline ecosystem. For it is at the edge of the dunes where the sea turtles nest and lay their eggs. A love affair with sea turtles soon developed and so did the awareness of the greater problem: sea turtles, their habitats and their very survival are threatened worldwide.

​Erik and Barb thought they could help in some small way. Together, they designed and made their own molds for beach-themed gift soaps so that through their sales they might help bring awareness and support for sea turtle protection programs, hospitals, and dune re-nourishment programs. These platforms are making a dramatic impact—globally! As sales grow so will the portion of Sea Oat Soap revenues that are targeted toward these programs.

Their story could never be complete without including KAYLA'S STORY.

They met a young woman during her doctoral process at UNC Wilmington NC. She willingly opened her crowded schedule and shared her story with them. She related how she had witnessed a sea turtle "boil" as a younger child and announced that she would become a marine biologist and study sea turtles when  she grew up. With much encouragement from family and friends and her own determination and hard work, she has done just that!

They have the distinct honor of sharing her story on a continuing basis with many young people (and quite a few adults) who have been influenced by what she has written. Her journey is both inspiring and challenging to everyone as partnering stewards of our amazing oceans and beaches.
